Don’t Wait for Perfect

It’s hard to believe January is almost over. While the cold winter days seem to pass by slowly, before we know it Spring will be here! Now that we are a solid three weeks into 2019, how are those New Year goals coming along? Are you staying consistent? Do you feel like you’ve already fallen off the wagon? Hopefully not. But if you have, you are not alone. The reality is that there is never a perfect time to start. Life moves on whether we are ready or not. Our ‘now’ moment is continually transforming into our past. Every micro choice we make turns into a lifestyle; a destiny that we create for ourselves. As overwhelming as this sounds, let it also encourage you. Why?

You don’t have to wait for Monday. You don’t have to wait for morning. You definitely don’t have to wait for February 1st. Start now. With your next meal, your next workout, the next thing you say, and the next thought you allow yourself to dwell on.  Have a “just start” mindset, then be consistent. Perfectionism comes from a fear mindset, namely, a fear of failure. Don’t be afraid to fail. When you do fail, embrace your failure and adversity and let it make you better. Coach of multiple CrossFit Games champions, Ben Bergeron writes:

“The problem with limiting yourself to training, practicing, and living within your comfort zone is that it prevents you from growing and reaching your full potential. We need to struggle because the struggle is what makes us better – the struggle itself is the journey…We have an instinctive fear of the one thing that is certain to lead to the results we crave. When we know this, the challenges, hardships, and struggles that might seemingly look like setbacks and things to avoid become anything but – they become defining moments that create the most dramatic changes and should be cherished and sought after, not feared and endured.”

If you already feel like your New Year goals are getting away from you, it’s okay. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can – today. As James Clear writes, “Getting 1% better each day is still getting better.” If you need help coming up with a strategy to reach your fitness and nutrition goals, reach out to a coach! We are all on this journey together and would love to help.
