#GOALS

As we enter the New Year, we are all making resolutions and strategizing on how to make this our best year yet. Like the old saying goes, “fail to plan, plan to fail.” Writing goals out is an effective tool and strongly associated with achieving them. There is power in visualization. This might sound cliche. Perhaps you’ve tried it in the past, taking time and effort to list out your goals, only to feel disappointed if you are unable to reach them.

Rather than give up on goal setting, try a new approach this year. Get SMART as you write your goals.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Relevant

T – Timely

Instead of saying, “get better at CrossFit,” be more specific. For example, you could say, “Get deficit handstand push-ups and 200 unbroken double unders.” Then give yourself a deadline. “By March 1st.” Seeing this will actually remind you to practice these things. It is a small goal you can actively work toward, but in the end, will you be better at CrossFit because of it? Yes. SMART goals can be applied to all areas of your life, not just fitness. Instead of saying, “spend more time with family,” you could write, “have at least one sit down meal as a family per week.” Make sure your goals are attainable. Rather than say, “read 100 books this year,” you could start with, “read two books a month.”

It’s not about limiting yourself. It’s about being real and achieving small goals and victories, because they add up. Many people find themselves frustrated and discouraged at the end of the year, feeling as though they could have done more to become the person they wanted to be. Others feel overwhelmed, wondering where they lost focus and got off track. Don’t let this be you 365 days from now. Make everyday count. Remember the “little” things are important. Do something, everyday, that will get you closer to your goals.

Andy Stanley writes, “Direction, not intention, determines destination.” When you get to the end of 2019, will you have moved forward toward your goals? Or just be full of good intentions and ideas?

Write it down. Then go do it!
